Support for Flood-Affected Families in Mandi District
During the monsoon season, heavy rainfall and cloudbursts caused extensive damage in parts of Mandi district. SRDA provided immediate cash assistance to 155 affected families to meet urgent needs. Beneficiaries were identified through field verification and community coordination. Support was provided transparently in collaboration with local authorities.nn
Impact:
Emergency support helped families meet basic needs such as food, shelter repair, and household essentials. The assistance reduced distress migration and financial vulnerability. Communities were able to begin recovery faster after the disaster. SRDAu2019s timely intervention strengthened community resilience and trust.
Disaster Crisis in Himachal Pradesh SRDA Study Highlights Recurring Loss, Displacement, and Urgent Need for Land-Based Rehabilitation
Himachal Pradesh is facing an intensifying disaster crisis, with cloudbursts, floods, and landslides becoming a recurring reality rather than isolated events. As part of its ongoing study in the state, SRDA has found that the same communities are being repeatedly affected, leading to cumulative losses over time.
In recent years, around 24,885 houses were affected in 2023 and 7,625 in 2025, along with significant and often permanent loss of agricultural land. The study highlights that beyond immediate damage, communities are facing repeated displacement and are forced to rebuild in unsafe locations due to the lack of available land for rehabilitation.
With a large proportion of the state classified as forest land, resettlement options remain severely constrained. These findings underline the urgent need to integrate land use planning, rehabilitation, and ecological considerations into long-term disaster response and development planning in Himachal Pradesh.
